Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at admin@responsiblebreeder.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

It is fun and enlightening to how much an individual might know or not know.  Most breeders will have a hard time with this test because they aren't full of the complete knowledge of what ethical and responsible breeding is.  Mentors must pass the test, be vetted and participate in an interview to be considered for acceptance into the program as a mentor.

The FREE test is for educational purposes and does not commit you to anything.

Breeding mixed breeds can be responsible — but only under specific, ethical conditions.

When It’s NOT Responsible:

No health testing: If the parents aren’t screened for inheritable diseases, it’s risky.

Just for profit: Breeding for trends (like doodles or merle mixes) without knowledge of genetics or temperament is unethical.

No plan for puppies: If there’s no screening of homes, contracts, or lifetime support — that’s backyard breeding.

When It CAN Be Responsible:

Clear goals: Like creating healthier dogs with a purpose (e.g., service dogs, sport, or working roles).

Full transparency: Including accurate labeling (not passing mixes as "rare" purebreds).

Health + temperament tested parents.

Puppy raising and placement standards just as high as any top-tier purebred breeder.

Willingness to take back pups at any point in their life.

Final thought:

Responsible breeding isn’t about purebred vs. mixed — it’s about intent, ethics, education, and follow-through.

We support learning and growing.  Even if you have a mixed litter coming or have an idea you want to explore regarding mixing dogs, you can still join responsiblebreeder.org!  We are here to guide and educate kindly and gently.

Breeding dogs without pedigrees or registration can be done responsibly — but it's a very narrow lane, and it usually isn’t.

When it’s NOT responsible:

No proof of ancestry = no way to track health, temperament, or inbreeding.

Often means no health testing, no titles, no mentorship, and no accountability.

Puppies can’t be entered in conformation, sport, or health databases — which limits improvement of the breed or line.

Often used by backyard breeders or “cash crop” litters for quick money.

When it might be responsible:

The breeder has deep knowledge of the lines and health history, even without papers (like in rare working breeds or rescues).

The dogs are health tested, serve a purpose (service, herding, sport), and are temperament evaluated.

The breeder is transparent, has contracts, and screens homes.

They’re working to restore or improve a breed or landrace line with guidance and oversight (e.g., working ranch dogs, indigenous types, etc.).

Final word:

Papers don’t guarantee ethics, but no papers usually means no proof. A responsible breeder can explain the why, prove the how, and stand behind their pups — papered or not.

You are still welcome here at responsiblebreeder.org!  Any responsible and ethical breeders know that mismanagement and accidents happen.  It can happen to anyone.  The point of becoming a member is to learn and grow so that this doesn't happen again.  We can help guide you through the whelping process, pregnant dams and support through a very stressful time.
